I’m really no good when it comes to woodworking.  I still have bad dreams about making a lamp in Jr. High wood shop (Not really, but I’ve been known to exaggerate a little).  I have always marvelled at the craftsmanship of the early pioneers.  With tools ever so basic they created works that are in many ways far more superior to what we do today.  I wonder why we have gotten to the point that everything has to be done with power tools and why we price craftsmanship beyond the pocketbooks of all but the most wealthy.

While visiting Lincoln’s New Salem Historic site I was interested in the lines and forms created by the old technique of building cabins. The result:

I’m not a great fan of strenuous exercise, I know, that’s not a good thing.

But I have this strange fascination for cyclers.  I caught these three in the mountains of SW France on my last trip.

I was fascinated by Parisian markets on a recent visit. Now dont get me wrong, it’s not like I’m a farmer who would recognize all the various seeds by shape, or whatever.

It’s bulk shopping in it’s original form. We often think that marketing “innovations” are actually innovations when often they are simply old ideas revisited.

When I was young my parents owned a hardware store — around the era when family hardwares were being displaced by the True Values and Ace Hardwares of the world. We ended up auctioning the hardware store off, in order to get out of it, but bulk merchandise was a regular part of our stock.

This scene brought back a lot of memories.

Was it the fact that our visit to Newport OR and the Oregon Coast occurred at the end of August that gave the visit a bluesy mood?  The end of summer; a preparation for autumn; changing of seasons and changes in life.

But more than that, there is something about a life at sea that to a landlubber like me is incredibly complex and that was partly what I wanted to convey.

Oh — and by the way — if you do visit,

take a few hours and check out the Oregon Coast Aquarium

For a small town, it’s a wonderful museum with a delightful

AVIARY — yes, an avairy at an aquarium!
