A Word About Style...

When I'm asked, "What kind of photographer are you?" I always cringe. The problem is that I not only don't fit very well into categories, I try very hard to stay outside of such boxes. Long ago I realized that about the time other people were getting familiar with their job and learning to like that familiarity that I was getting ready to move on to something else and keep learning. After 40 years of shooting, I'm still the same person I was then.
- I am less photographer and more artist.
- I believe in working in the moment -- not replicating what I've created before
- I tell stories but do not consider myself a photojournalist because my work is not about story-telling, it's simply what happens in the process of creation.
- I view most everything I shoot as if it were landscape.... from architecture, to portraits, to weddings.
- What do I mean by that? I am fascinated by lines, forms, textures, and color
- Light is the source of all glory. But the absence of light adds intrique and mystery
- Cameras, lenses, and lights are nothing more than tools - the equipment doesn't make the artist.
- I crave image simplicity, precise focus and rules of structure -- but I know when to break rules, soften focus and clutter my images for effect.
